Legal Aid Society of Story County Seeks Equal Justice Works Fellowship to Expand Juvenile Representation
NEVADA, Iowa — The Legal Aid Society of Story County has applied to host a 2027 Equal Justice Works Fellow, proposing a two-year project to expand legal representation for children, parents, and caregivers involved in Story County juvenile court proceedings.
Legal Aid has selected Derrick Hinton II as its Fellowship candidate. If selected, Derrick would serve primarily in juvenile matters where access to appointed counsel is limited. When juvenile appointments do not require his full capacity, he would also assist eligible clients with family-law matters.
Story County has a limited number of attorneys available to accept juvenile court appointments, and Legal Aid’s current attorneys cannot absorb the level of need while maintaining their existing civil caseloads. The Fellowship would allow Legal Aid to expand representation while evaluating the demand, cost, and sustainability of providing these services long term.
As required by Equal Justice Works, Legal Aid has certified its commitment to employ Derrick and implement the proposed project if Fellowship funding is awarded.
